EC is an intergenerational, research-based literacy intervention program model for students in Kindergarten through third grade. Volunteer older adults are recruited, screened and extensively trained to increase children’s reading level. Every volunteer tutors nine students in small groups of three in the classroom during the two hour reading block. Of the 554 CPS students served in 2014-2015, 47% reached grade level reading and 62% advanced one to two years or more in reading levels.
