Free Write Arts & Literacy
Free Write Arts & Literacy provides one-on-one literacy tutoring, workshops in creative writing, visual art, and music production, as well as publishing and public performance opportunities to youth currently detained in the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (CCJTDC).

Our approach to building competencies within the arts, literacy and positive youth development domains adheres to national Social and Emotional Learning Standards. Free Write provides the space and tools necessary to teach and practices the skills needed to effectively participate in the compendium of Restorative Justice models. Through increased literacy, written self-expression, exposure to and study of the performing, visual and literary arts, Free Write students become functionally literate and many become highly proficient, the narrators of their own stories and authors of their own futures. Each of our students has a unique and powerful story to tell. Literacy, self-expression, and an understanding of their own social and cultural surroundings are keys to overcoming the weighty obstacles each of these young people faces.
